BAYSIDE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- With the election just over a month away, notable officials are making stops in Wisconsin to campaign for their candidate of choice. In Bayside, former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords campaigned for Vice President Harris and Governor Tim Walz.
The former representative retired from office in Arizona after she was shot in the head during an assassination attempt in 2011.
“America needs all of us to speak out, even when you have to fight to find the words," Giffords said at the event.
Giffords survived the attack in 2011, but six people were killed and 12 more were injured. Since then, Giffords has advocated for stricter gun laws and other gun violence prevention programs. At the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, Giffords told voters she believes the Harris-Walz campaign can do just that.
“We let the shooting continue or we can act. We can protect our families, our future, we can vote, we can be on the right side of history," said Giffords.
Several voters at the event say they felt compelled to get involved because they want gun violence to be eliminated at both the state and national level.
“To have her come here, in a place where we have a chance to actually make meaningful change on gun legislation in this election, it feels really exciting," said Jennifer Hoffman-Jonas, the co-chair for Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.
State Rep. Deb Andraca was also at the event and pushed for gun control as a gun owner.
“I mean, I am a gun owner. I have my concealed carry permit, and I know that strong gun violence protection and the second amendment go hand in hand, but we need to start talking about it if we’re going to start saving lives," said Andraca.
