MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Three Milwaukee police officers were injured in a shooting that happened near 91st and Custer on Thursday, Sept. 5.
Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said in a news conference, around 10:15 a.m. officers were in the area seeking a suspect wanted for felony possession of a firearm, domestic-violence-related false imprisonment, and sexual assault.
Officers attempted to communicate with the suspect, who ended up firing shots at officers and then gunfire was exchanged.
After the gunfire ceased, officers continued communication with the suspect.
Following the shooting, officials say the suspect -- identified as a 35-year-old man -- surrendered to police.
The suspect surrendered two firearms with extended magazines and taken to Froedtert Hospital for treatment of non-fatal injuries.
Three officers sustained non-fatal injuries in the shooting: a 43-eary-old man with over 19 years of service, a 49-year-old man with over 19 years of service, and a 44-year-old male with over 21 years of service.
Four officers fired their weapons during this incident. All of them will be placed on administrative leave per police protocol.
Chief Norman said officers on the Special Investigations Division that execute these warrants try to de-escalate these situations.
"As we can see, the behavior that was responded with this particular, almost de-escalation-type of style where they're very well trained in regard to this type of work, was responded with shots fired. That is unacceptable," said Chief Norman.
